Senior Biologist & Practice Area Manager

Base Compensation

$130,000 to $165,000 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

Terrapex has an opening for a Senior Biologist to join our Ecology team in a leadership role.  This is a full‑time permanent position with flexible working arrangements.  Our preference is for candidates to be based out of Toronto, Hamilton, or Durham Region; however, we will consider qualified candidates that reside in Ontario outside of these areas.

Working with and under the leadership of the Vice President, Environmental Services, the successful candidate will assume a senior leadership role in the Company and be responsible for:

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of business development and growth strategies for the Ecology practice area specifically, and the Environmental service line overall;
  • Developing and maintaining technical procedures, forms, templates, and similar resources in accordance with best industry practices and regulatory requirements for the completion of environmental impact studies, natural heritage evaluations, species at risk evaluations, natural heritage feature assessments, wetland evaluations, fish habitat assessments, and other ecological work programs;
  • Identifying tools, equipment, and other resources required to optimize productivity with the Ecology practice area;
  • Establishing and managing the technical training program for Terrapex staff working in the Ecology practice area; and,
  • Exemplifying the core values and vision and mission statements of Terrapex in all aspects of their work.

The successful candidate will also have a senior consultant role within the Ecology practice area, with responsibilities and accountabilities including:

  • Planning and leading discipline-specific field programs, ensuring technical excellence, safety, and quality and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key clients, regulators, team members, and other stakeholders;
  • Developing scopes of work and preparing and submitting proposals;
  • Contributing to environmental impact assessments, mitigation plans, and proposals; and assisting in preparing and obtaining regulatory approvals for a wide variety of projects such as real estate development, transportation, renewable energy, mining, oil, and gas, etc.
  • Managing projects from start to finish, including designing work programs, identifying and allocating resources, planning, delegating and scheduling project tasks, and managing budgets and deliverables;
  • Supporting the Terrapex Ecology team’s workload and resource management.
  • Overseeing the preparation of accurate and complete reports and performing QA/QC on technical work;
  • Providing technical expertise and advice to project staff; and
  • Promoting a safety culture in all aspects of work.

The position will also provide opportunities for field supervision and oversight, as well as occasional travel, largely within southern Ontario.

Requirements and Experience:

  • A university degree in biology or a closely related field;
  • Fifteen or more years of progressive ecological experience, preferably in a consulting or equivalent role;
  • Sound knowledge of field techniques and regulatory standards necessary for conducting a variety of discipline-specific field activities (i.e., wildlife habitat assessments, bird surveys, wildlife inventories, species at risk assessments, fish/amphibian surveys and salvages, and/or fish habitat assessment); Specialization in fisheries or wildlife biology would be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of the provincial and federal environmental assessment regulatory environment and experience obtaining regulatory approvals;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, desire to grow business, and work closely (both in a field lead and support role) with other environmental professionals; and,
  • A valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License.
